Kazanelson Park was planned along a boulevard in the heart of an old neighborhood in Kiryat Ata. The boulevard, which was in a neglected state, radiated a depressing heaviness. In the design we aimed at returning some fun and light to the park, the boulevard and the neighborhood.
Kazanelson Park is linear and includes a main meandering path along which were interspersed a few plazas and other physical elements. The park incorporates primary geometrical forms, such as triangles, squares , circles and spirals in a way which enables the user to invent every time a new use. In effect, a dialogue is created between the user and the elements in the park, between the obvious and the unexpected.
The colors chosen for use in the park, for the pavements and the walls, were the shades of sky and earth. For instance, the heavy Fichus trees that in the past imparted a dreary atmosphere in the boulevard, were supported with blue walls which resulted in providing an atmosphere of fun and joy.
The joyous atmosphere that accompanied us during the process of design, eventually infected the local users of the park. The lightness and special atmosphere "caught" the neighborhood dwellers and the park became "their place", a place for all ages at all hours during day and evening. Undoubtedly contributing to this effect were also the sculptures in the form of imaginary ancient creatures combined with play elements. These elements were constructed as a result of a very fruitful dialogue with the artist Aaral'e Ben-Arie.
